| Winter Skills Courses 2009/10
We provide a variety of mountain based activities ranging from introductory courses for the complete novice to personal training days for experienced hill walkers.
Winter skills training course
Learn the techniques used for a safe mountain passage. Our courses are aimed at novices with no winter experience or for people with some previous winter walking experience looking to gain more confidence and push their boundaries further onto graded winter climbs.
What to expect
A reasonable level of fitness is required for our 5 day training course. We will cover weather interpretation, navigation, route findng, avalanche awarness and snowpack interpretation, crampon and ice axe techniques, snow hole, survival techniques and security and movement on steep ground.
Course Dates: Sunday the 21st to friday the 26th February 2010.
Sunday the 28th February to 5th March 2010.
Course and accommodation including breakfast, lunch and dinner and pick up/drop of in Edinburgh International Airport or Waverley Station £550 pp
The five day course will be based in the southern Cairngorms in and around the Glen Shee hills. You will meet your instructor on the first day at 1600 hrs outside Edinburgh waverley rail station. From there we will head North arriving in Glen Shee at our accommodation for 1900hrs.
Day 1 Pickup and Travel to accomodation Course briefing and introduction.
Day 2 - 4 will be spend covering all aspects of the course content as mentioned above.
Day 5 will start on the hill with the transport returning to Edinburgh for 1600hrs.

Equipment required:-
Ice axe (walking straight shaft minimum 50 cm)
Crampons
Full set of waterproofs (preferable breathable material)
Warm winter clothes including hats, gloves, fleeces, ski Goggles etc ( enough for 5 days on the hill)
Four season walking boots that are crampon compatible
Compass and map of area 1:50000 scale OS sheet 43
Headtorch with spare battery and bulb
Snow shovel Helmet
Crampons, ice axe, Helmet, shovel, waterproofs and headtorches can be hired at a cost of £10 per item for the week.
Your accommodation will be spent at the Blackwater residential centre just ten minutes drive from the Glen Shee ski area. This newly refurbished centre is an ideal base for the course. There is space for up to fifteen people and it is self catering. Dinner will be spent at a local restaurant the price includes food but not drink for the evening.
Course only: £280.00 pp.
A deposit of £100 pp is required on booking the course with full payment required two weeks before the starting dates.
Destinations and accommodation may change due to weather and snow pack build up.
One and two day weekend courses are available on request for those of us to busy to attend a five day course, cost is set at £135.00 pp. The time constraints of the weekend course will enable us to cover basic winter skills, ideal if you are looking to refresh old skills or learn a few new ones. Course will run with a minimum of 3 people. One to one instruction is available at £140 per day plus travelling expensis. Please email for a quote.
